How Much Does Riding An E-Scooter Really Cost 2026

by pengfei guo on Aug 24, 2026

On this page

  • The upfront cost
  • The cost of "fuel"
  • Maintenance, the part people underestimate
  • The battery question
  • What you're not paying for
  • The all-in number
  • The honest caveats

Everyone asks about the sticker price. Almost nobody asks the question that actually matters: what does it cost to ride one, mile after mile, for years? That's the number that decides whether an electric scooter saves you money or just moves your spending around.

Let's run it honestly, using the Varla Eagle One PRO as the example.

How Much Does Riding An E-Scooter Really Cost 2026

The upfront cost

The Eagle One PRO is $1,699, down from a $2,599 list price. That's real money, and it's the part everyone fixates on. But an upfront price only means something once you spread it over the life of the machine. A commuter riding 10 miles a day, five days a week, covers about 2,600 miles a year. Over three years, that's roughly 7,800 miles, and the scooter's purchase price works out to about $0.22 per mile. Over five years it drops to around $0.13.

Compare that to a car, where the average cost per mile in the US lands north of $0.70 once you include depreciation, insurance, fuel, and maintenance. The scooter is cheaper before you've even plugged it in.

The cost of "fuel"

This is where electric riding stops feeling like a purchase and starts feeling like a rounding error.

The Eagle One PRO carries a battery of roughly 0.9 kWh. At the US average of about 17 cents per kWh, a full charge costs somewhere around 15 cents. If a full charge takes you 35 to 40 miles in real-world riding, you're spending well under half a cent per mile on energy.

Put it another way: charging the scooter every single day for a year costs about $55. That's less than one tank of gas in most SUVs. And unlike gas prices, your electricity rate doesn't lurch 40% when something happens on the other side of the world.

Maintenance, the part people underestimate

An e-scooter has far fewer moving parts than a car, and no oil, no transmission, no exhaust. But it isn't maintenance-free, and pretending otherwise is how people end up frustrated. Budget for these:

  • Tires. Off-road and high-speed riding wears rubber. Plan on replacing tires every 1,500 to 3,000 miles depending on your surfaces and how hard you accelerate.
  • Brake pads. A scooter that moves quickly needs brakes that work. Pads are inexpensive and are the single most important thing to stay ahead of. Our Zoom hydraulic brake kit for the Eagle One PRO runs $190 if you want a full upgrade rather than a pad swap.
  • Bolt checks and torque. Free. Fifteen minutes a month with an Allen key. This is the highest-return maintenance there is, and it costs nothing but attention.
  • Occasional consumables. Grips, tubes, a fuse, cables. Small, occasional, unavoidable.

A realistic maintenance budget for a rider putting on serious mileage is $100 to $200 a year. Lighter riders will spend less.

The battery question

The honest part of the conversation. Lithium battery packs degrade, and eventually you'll notice your range isn't what it was. A well-treated pack typically holds up for several hundred full charge cycles before capacity drops noticeably, which for most riders means years, not months.

Habits matter more than luck here. Avoid storing the scooter at 0% or sitting at 100% for weeks, don't charge a pack that's still hot from a hard ride, and keep it indoors through winter. Riders who do these things routinely get far more life out of a pack than riders who don't, and it costs nothing.

What you're not paying for

The savings that don't show up in a spec sheet:

  • No fuel stops. You charge at home while you sleep.
  • No parking. In most cities, a scooter parks where a car cannot, for free.
  • No insurance premium, in most jurisdictions, for a personal scooter. Check your local rules.
  • No registration or emissions testing.
  • No traffic. Not a dollar figure, but ask anyone who's cut a 35-minute crawl down to 12 minutes what that's worth.

The all-in number

For a commuter riding roughly 2,600 miles a year on an Eagle One PRO over five years:

Cost Five-year total
Scooter $1,699
Electricity about $275
Maintenance and consumables about $750
Accessories (helmet, lock, seat) about $250
Total roughly $2,975

That's about $0.23 per mile, all in, for 13,000 miles of riding. The same mileage in an average car costs somewhere in the range of $9,000.

The honest caveats

An e-scooter isn't a car replacement for everyone. If you regularly haul kids, groceries for five, or drive an hour each way in a snowbelt, this math doesn't apply to you the same way. And a high-performance scooter demands respect: a helmet is not optional, and the money you save on fuel is not worth a hospital visit.

But for the rider doing 5 to 15 miles a day in a city or on mixed terrain, the numbers aren't close. The upfront cost is the whole cost, more or less. Everything after that is pennies.
