Winter can be hard on an electric scooter, even when you are not riding it. Freezing temperatures can reduce battery performance, moisture can cause corrosion, and leaving a scooter unused with the wrong battery charge can shorten its lifespan.
If you plan to stop riding for several weeks or months, simply parking your electric scooter in the garage and forgetting about it is not the best approach.
Proper winter storage means protecting three things: the battery, the electrical system, and the mechanical components.
This guide explains how to store an electric scooter in winter, including what to do with the battery, tires, brakes, and scooter itself before spring arrives.
Can You Store an Electric Scooter in a Cold Garage During Winter?
You can keep the scooter itself in a garage during winter, but a heated or temperature-controlled space is preferable, especially in regions where temperatures regularly fall below freezing.
The biggest concern is the lithium-ion battery.
Cold temperatures temporarily reduce lithium-ion battery performance. More importantly, charging a lithium-ion battery when it is below freezing can damage the cells.
For long-term storage, try to keep the battery in a dry environment at approximately:
50°F–77°F (10°C–25°C)
If your scooter has a removable battery, storing the scooter in a cold garage while keeping the battery indoors is often the simplest solution.
For example, some Varla electric scooters use removable battery designs, making it easier to separate battery storage from scooter storage.
If the battery cannot be removed, storing the entire scooter somewhere protected from freezing temperatures is the safer choice.

How to Store an Electric Scooter in Winter
Before putting your scooter away for several months, spend a little time preparing it. This can prevent battery problems, flat tires, rust, and brake issues when you start riding again.
1. Clean the Scooter Before Storage
Do not store a scooter covered in road dirt, mud, salt, or moisture.
Winter road salt is particularly problematic because it can accelerate corrosion on:
- Bolts and fasteners
- Brake components
- Wheel hardware
- Suspension components
- Exposed metal surfaces
Use a damp cloth and mild cleaner to wipe down the frame, deck, wheels, and accessible components.

2. Do Not Store the Battery Completely Full or Empty
One of the most important winter storage rules involves battery charge.
Do not leave a lithium-ion scooter battery sitting at 0% for several months. Self-discharge can eventually push the cells below their safe voltage range.
Storing the battery continuously at 100% is not ideal either. A fully charged lithium-ion battery remains at a higher voltage, which increases chemical stress during long-term storage.
A practical target is approximately:
40%–60% charge
You do not need to hit exactly 50%.
The goal is simply to avoid leaving the battery completely empty or fully charged throughout the winter.
3. Remove the Battery If Your Scooter Allows It
A removable battery makes winter storage considerably easier.
Remove it from the scooter and keep it somewhere:
- Dry
- Indoors
- Away from direct sunlight
- Away from heaters
- Away from freezing temperatures
- Away from combustible materials
Do not leave the battery next to a furnace, radiator, fireplace, or other heat source.

A waterproof cover helps protect against rain and snow, but it does not solve every problem.
An electric scooter stored outside is still exposed to:
