Before You Go

Perform Simple Safety Checks

First, check the air pressure, make sure it’s within the proper range. Too low or too high air pressure can easily lead to a flat tire. Take Varla’s scooter tires as an example, the maximum tire pressure is 50 PSI. Before traveling, check that the pressure is within the range of 35-45 PSI.

Second, check the braking performance. There should be no debris on the brake rotor, and make sure that no noise can be heard when rotating.

Third, check that the headlights and taillights can work normally. Press and hold the Mode button for 3 seconds to turn on the headlights; when you pull the brakes and the taillights flash.

Wear A Helmet

Regardless of whether the driving regulations require the rider to wear a helmet, we recommend that you can wear a helmet to travel.

Since our Eagle One scooters' speed can reach up to 40 MPH, which is much higher than 20 MPH, we should choose electric bicycles or motorcycle helmets. These e-bike helmets need to meet the Dutch NTA-8776 e-bike standard or a motorcycle helmet meeting the Snell M-2005, Snell M-2010, or DOT FMVSS-218 standard.

And pay attention to choose a helmet that suits your head, they will give you the most head protection possible.

Wear Protective Gear

When riding, faster means more danger. We must pay special attention to our own safety. It's a great idea to wear protective gear, such as wrist pads, elbow pads, and knee pads. Once you fall, they will protect your palm or joints as much as possible. We prioritize the safety issue, considering Eagle one is a big power scooter, going up to 40 MPH. It's important to wear protective gear when riding on Varla Eagle One. We are happy to send you a set of protective gear worth $69 for the rider's safety as a gift.

Make Sure You Are Comfortable

First, make sure that you are feeling well today. If you feel uncomfortable, then don't go out on a scooter. It is also a good choice to take the subway or bus sometimes.

Second, wear suitable riding clothes. Your ability to focus on the road while driving long-distance will depend on how comfortable you are. It allows you to drive the scooter flexibly, especially for you to make an emergency response at high speed.

9 Tips When Riding

  1. Do Not Ride with One Hand

No matter how urgent the call is, you don't need to answer it when you are riding. Especially when you are driving at high speed (more than 20 MPH), DON'T ride with the phone in one hand and the handle in the other. They will make you easily lose control of the scooter, which will cause you to lose balance and fall. If you have to do something, stop for a minute. Then move on after you've done! Your safety is far more important than this minute!

  1. Do Not Use Your Mobile Device When Riding

Many people will install their mobile phones on the handlebars so they can check messages or check route navigation in time. This is really convenient, but if the rider pays more attention to the new message that pops up, it's likely that an accident will occur because of negativing the road ahead!

It is best to concentrate on watching the road, arrive at the destination early, and then check the message with ease. It's also great if you can stop a little bit, check out the messages, then go on!

Safety comes first!

  1. Watch Out for the Other Riders

Sometimes you will obey all traffic rules and speed limits as much as possible to protect yourself more likely. However, it is difficult to avoid other people bumping into you.

Therefore, we suggest that you assume that other riders may not be good at riding when you are riding a scooter. Be prepared for that other people will suddenly stop, make sharp turns, fall, and other unexpected situations. Be cautious, it's always right.

  1. Do Not Follow Too Closely

Since we cannot predict the thoughts of others in advance, please do not follow scooters or bikes ahead. Keep a distance to give yourself enough time to reflect when the vehicle suddenly turns or stops. Experts recommend giving yourself 3-4 seconds between yourself and the vehicle in front. Refers to the time that allows you to arrive at the vehicle in front of you in about 3-4 seconds after it has stopped. If you are driving at night or in bad weather, you can increase it to 7-8 seconds.

  1. Brake in the Correct Way

The correct braking method is to brake the rear wheels first and then the front wheels. For Varla scooters, the left brake controls the rear wheels, and the right brake controls the front wheels. Then you need to train your subconscious reflections in your usual riding to brake safely. If you brake the front wheel first, it may cause you to fall off suddenly.

Besides, it's important to brake more smoothly and slowly to avoid sudden braking. Especially when riding on rainy days, the road is relatively slippery, and sudden braking can easily cause tires to slip. Therefore, remember to brake the rear wheel first and brake slowly.

  1. Follow Traffic Signals

Most riders will follow traffic signals, stop when the red light on; and pass when the green light on. But when yellow light is on, some riders will still pass. We suggest that riders should stop when it is safe too, because the light is about to turn red. And we cannot be sure, whether there are cars or pedestrians are passing suddenly.

  1. Do Not Rely Solely on Cruise Control

Many riders rely on cruise control for the most part of commuting. The scooter can Keep a constant speed without requiring the rider to tighten the throttle all the time. It's indeed very convenient. However, if the rider relies solely on cruise control, it is easy to neglect the surrounding. Once accident occurs, it may take longer to respond and put rider in danger. If you prefer using cruise control, make it short and make sure to keep your focus on the road ahead.

  1. Turn On the Lights When in Bad Weather

When it is dark or rainy, or foggy, it will make it difficult to see each other and focus on road conditions due to reduced visibility. Therefore, make sure to keep the headlights on. If possible, you can consider adding more lighting equipment to the scooter to remind others and illuminate the road ahead.

  1. Slow Down

When speeding on wet roads, the possibility of accidents will increase because the scooters driving at high speeds take longer to stop on wet roads. If the forecast predicts a wet day or it’s the rainy season, please be sure to leave home 15-20 minutes earlier than usual to give more commute time for yourself, so you don't have to worry. You can focus more on the road conditions and ride more safely.
